I do hope though that we’ll see Sonakshi play to her strengths more often. There isn’t much scope for nuance here but she has an emotional depth that surfaces occasionally. I would love to see more of that.

Sonakshi Sinha plays Akira, a girl who has been taught to stand up to bullies from her childhood. She stands in the way of a bunch of crooked cops headed by Anurag Kashyap. What unfolds keeps you hooked for one hundred and thirty eight minutes. As they say, 'Full Paisa Vasool!'
Manisha Lakhne, Nowrunning
Sonakshi moves, feels and looks the part in an effort that's empty heft because the script is extraordinarily dated and bereft of punch
Sukanya Verma, REDIFF
This Sonakshi Sinha starrer has a few enjoyable moments but ultimately sabotages itself.
Suprateek Chatterjee, Huffington Post
The film certainly has its moments, and Sonakshi does her career no harm by revealing a new facet of herself, but Akira isn't blockbuster material.

Breaking stereotypes is the best way to creating a good film. So AR Murugadoss' Akira puts a spin on the action-thriller genre by substituting a traditional male hero with an off-kilter female protagonist. But just like the hero, she can fight, rebel and give the bad guys a taste of their own medicine. Akira is the film you’d make to even the playing field for gender equality. A film that treats its ladies as people and not just victims of a male dominated world. It has an unmistakable formulaic approach but it works out alright.

Akira - All Reviews

The result is a tonally confused mess that left me mostly stupefied, and frankly glad that I didn't spend my own money on a ticket this time. Poor acting, poor action, embarrassing writing, and lazy plotting sink this film almost before it gets started, but by the time the credits roll, you'll just be glad it's over.

The trailer for Akira may have packed a punch, but the songs from the film haven'€™t made that kind of impact
Sreeju Sudhakaran, Bollywood Life
The intensity and hard-core action level in 'Akira' is bit diluted. It promises to be a good action thriller but ends up being a decent action drama which had all potential to become a taut film.

Anurag Kashyap, in an over-the-top role as a corrupt policeman, seems to be having the most fun. He laughs maniacally, snarls menacingly, and channels every 80s bad cop character we’ve seen. If it wasn’t for him, “Akira” would have been a complete loss as a film.

What you get with Akira is still very enjoyable, though, even with its regular baddies (trying hard to infuse terror) and scanty procedural

The second half lacks the sharpness and edge of the first half. All said and done, AR Murugadoss directed AKIRA has the kind of tempting action thriller allure that edges other routine adrenaline with its constant edge of the seat excitement showing Sonakshi Sinha's in a power pack action avatar. Maggie Davis, India.Com
My heart sinks every time a good concept is letdown by a lousy script. ‘Akira’ directed by A R Murugadoss spends too much time on setting up and dragging on a plot that could have been terse and taut.
Rummanna Ahmed, Yahoo!
Director AR Murugadoss’ third film after Ghajini and Holiday is an attempt to establish Akira as the new Shiva, the excellent student protagonist in Ram Gopal Varma’s 1989 film.

Rafat, Glam Sham
But why revenge action thrillers seem to resonate with many is because 'getting even' by returning a wrong with a mightier wrong has a soothing effect. And this is precisely what Akira hopes to capitalise on.
