CHEEKATI RAJYAM (Thoongaa Vanam) - All Reviews

After a racy first half, there are many scenes in second half dragged beyond the elastic limit and climax was also pulled unnecessarily. Despite all advantages and drawbacks, ‘Cheekati Rajyam’ is a far better movie from Kamal relative to many failure projects he has undertaken in recent times. So, Cinejosh rates Cheekati Rajyam with 2.75 stars for offering an above average action thriller.
A crime thriller with understated performances and calm proceedings, 'Cheekati Rajyam' could have been better. To say that it must be watched for Kamal's action and his neat screenplay would be like stating the obvious.
As said earlier, the movie has lot going for it like technical values, Kamal Haasan's performance and other actors' honest effort but it doesn't rise above the level of a taut and engaging thriller. Okay movie, on the whole.
First half of the film is nice. We expect second half to be more racy to make the film an edge-of-the-seat thriller. But the pace goes down in second half as proceedings become more and more sluggish. Plus points are realistic treatment and Kamal Haasan. On the flipside, a compact screenplay and less runtime (total runtime is almost 2 and half hours) would have made the film more interesting. We have to wait and see how audiences embrace this realistic thriller!
A not-so-racy, but unrelenting film which never lets you off the hook, ‘Thoongavanam’ almost combines the visceral force of an action film with the suspense and urgency of a thriller…
Thoonga Vanam is definitely not your regular thriller

Director Rajesh stuck to the subject and did not deviate from the main topic. He narrates the story with conviction and with Kamal Haasan's screenplay, he keeps viewers interested for most part of the film. Only problem with him is the film never picks up pace and looked like a documentary. After sometime viewers get disconnected especially in the second half. Overall Rajesh started off on a promising note.
On the whole, Cheekati Rajyam is a slick action thriller with interesting moments going its way. Racy first half, Kamal Haasan’s performance and some stylized action episodes are huge assets. On the flip side, a predictable story line and a slightly dragged out second half spoil things a bit. All those who like action thrillers will end up loving it big time and for the rest it ends up as just a decent watch this weekend.
Kamal Haasan's Cheekati Rajyam, though is not an edgy or racy thriller, the artists performances, ideal run time and the story makes it a must watch.
Kamal Hassan’s Cheekati Rajyam is one such a movie which our audience are expecting to watch. The team delivers a perfect movie. Both the halves are good to watch and is gripping. This movie begins and ends with a great intensity which is missing in our movies. Cheekati Rajyam is a must watch for those who expect something different from our routine movies. Screenplay, Camera angles, Ghibran’s background music and actor’s performance makes it great. Finally, a must watch movie from Kamal Hassan.
Overall Cheekati Rajyam is a much-needed break for Telugu Cinema. It doesn’t aspire to be a milestone in Indian Cinema but a sincere attempt to give a good cinema to the audience.
Every time you see the name ‘Kamal Haasan’ on big screen, you automatically expect to see something different and class apart from the regular formulaic flicks.

Kamal Haasan’s racy action thriller keeps you hooked from the word go!
Finally, Cheekati Rajyam ends up as a good thriller if not great. As said earlier adding more thrilling moments would have taken it to the next level. But still it is a decent watch. It's commercial aspects however are limited due to the genre's limited reach
Cheekati Rajyam will be loved by the audience who loves thrillers. As said, the screenplay gives the edge of the seat experience. But the sluggish second half, makes it a one time watch.
Cheekati Rajyam is a slick film with stunt sequences that look real. In how many films have we seen a male and female cop coming to blows with each other, in the process of standing up for what they feel is right? The musical score by Ghibran and the sound recording are top notch. And so is Sanu Varghese’s cinematography.
