SHANKARABHARANAM - Movie Reviews

Nothing worked in the first half in spite of desperate attempts to make us laugh. Second half largely runs on the scenes taken from 'Phas Gaya Re Obama'. There are attempts to add humor to the proceedings but nothing clicked except for a few one liners mouthed by Prithvi. Climax is slightly better than the rest of the movie but on a whole Shankarabharanam will leave you disappointed. Kona and only Kona have to be blamed for this as the script turns the main villain for this film.

Gautam plans to sell off his mother's ancestral royal palace but to his shock he finds that his uncle (Rao Ramesh) is living with all other relatives and his daughter's wedding is due in three days. All family members including his other daughter Happy (Nandita) falls for him unaware of his intentions. In the midst of all this three gangs including that of Munni (Anjali) try to kidnap and extort money from Gautam's family after knowing his NRI background. On the whole, Shankarabharanam is good only in bits and pieces. A dragged out first half, slow narration and some below par execution of crucial scenes spoil the effect most of the time. Having said that, you try this film out only for its unique story line and Pruthvi’s comedy punches here and there.

Film dragged right from the start to finish with lack of chemistry between hero and heroine. First half ends with pretty ordinary interval block. Comedy though tickled people had nothing new in it.

Despite these hiccups, Sankarabharanam can be a decent watch for people, who love slapstick comedies. All that that is bad about the film is only its spieled treatment.

Nikhil has looked clueless in most part of the movie. There is absolutely no chemistry between Nikhil and Nanditha. There is hardly any touch of Kona Venkat who is known for good comedy dramas although he has been credited in the movie from screenplay, dialogues, and also direction supervision. Defacto director he is as per the credits. But no grip over direction and screenplay is visible.

Absolute lack of new comedy tracks or missing of novelty in terms of story, character selection marred the promising skill showed by Kona during best of his times. Undoubtedly, the time has come for Kona to stop depending on confusing comedies. He just shifted the popular setting to in-between kidnap groups relying on the same confusion contexts. So, Cinejosh rates ‘Sankarabharanam’ 2.25 stars disrespecting Kona Venkat for dishonoring the old classic ‘Sankarabharanam’ with this utterly miserable film. Commercially, ‘Sankarabharanam’ might close its Box Office affair in less than one week.
